Yummy King BBQ Kitchen, Campsie

Yummy King BBQ Kitchen looks like any Chinese Roast Meats shop, with the window display in front displaying all the goodies and some seating inside for anyone that wants a quick meal. I have walked past Yummy King BBQ Kitchen many times, but never stopped to look, as my go to for Chinese roast meats, sits 5 stores further down at No 1 BBQ House. So when I was waiting in the area for some friends one day, I noticed the Peking duck special advertised on their window.

The Peking Duck Meal Set had two courses, the first course consisting of 12 pieces of duck meats and pancakes, and the second, duck fired rice (haha I think they mean duck fried rice), all this for $29.80. That’s a pretty damn good deal if you ask me, considering most restaurants charge well over $50 for this course. There is also that lingering question when it comes to Peking duck, am I really getting what I pay for, considering it’s usually only two courses of duck pancakes and duck noodle/san choy bow. What about the rest of the duck, some places allow you to have the duck frames, some charge extra, or does the restaurant take back the leftovers for soup etc. But at $29.80 we consider this to be a bargain and that lingering questions doesn’t seem to be an issue.

Peking Duck Meal Set $29.80

On a Thursday afternoon, we stopped by to try the Peking Duck Meal Set. We popped in at around 7pm, and was surprised to see the restaurant was packed and buzzing, lucky for us, the only table available was a booth which we quickly snatched up. The restaurant itself is small, with around 4 booths for sitting, and 2 tables crammed in the middle, and maybe another table or two towards the back. Once seated, the staff dropped off three menus, the main menu, the Peking duck special and a set menu. We already knew we wanted to try the Peking Duck Special, but weren’t sure if this was going to be enough food, I mean considering the price we were not expecting much at all. So we quickly reviewed the set menu, and was quite blown away with the value for money here. A set menu for two was only $29.80 whilst the set menu for 4 was priced at $46.80, so we quickly reviewed the main menu before making our choice.

Whilst reviewing the menu trying to make a decision, the staff brought over a bowl of complimentary soup consisting of pork bones, carrots and deboned chicken feet. We weren’t at a fancy Chinese restaurant, so this came to be a delightful surprise for us to enjoy.

The set menu was too good of an option to pass on, so we flagged down the staff and ordered the Peking duck set meal and the set menu for two. The set menu consisted of our choice of double roast meats, and we opted for the BBQ pork and Roast pork (you can pretty much pick anything you wanted, although suckling pig did incur a $10 surcharge), for our choice of main dish (which we had to select from a given list), we opted for the pan fried beef and Chinese broccoli, there was also steamed choy sum in oyster sauce and steamed rice included in the set menu. For drinks, I opted for the Iced Ceylon Tea - Hong Kong Style, whilst everyone else was happy with the complimentary tea.

So we sat back, serving ourselves the complimentary soup whilst we waited for our meals. It didn't take long for my Iced Ceylon Tea - Hong Kong Style tea to arrive, and it was very refreshing, the tea was strong and milky. The staff returned soon after we ordered, with our metal bucket of steamed rice, and our double variety of roast meats. We started to dig into the roast meats for a taste test, the roast pork was crispy and succulent, and the BBQ pork was not overly sweet and tender. They definitely do good versions of the roast pork and BBQ pork here.

It wasn’t long until we saw the staff carry a duck from the kitchen into the roast meat cutting area, and within a few minutes, the staff brought over our first duck course. There was two plates of beautifully arranged duck, batons of cucumbers and spring onions, a plate of pancakes and a small sauce plate of hoi sin sauce. The duck skin was super crispy and glossy, and there was also some meat on the slices too. It wasn’t perfect uniform pieces or super thin, some pieces had more meat than others, but it was absolutely delicious and together with the cucumber and spring onion, it was simply delightful. You know it’s a good meal, when there is no chatter at the time, just the silence of satisfaction.

As we dug into our duck, the rest of our food started to appear. The pan fried beef and Chinese broccoli was first to arrive, followed by our steamed choy sum in oyster sauce and duck fired rice. We did let everything sit for a little while, whilst we finished out duck. It then dawned upon us that maybe we had ordered too much food, so we took a breath and started to dig into the rest of our dishes. The duck fired rice was delicious, perfectly fried rice with small chunks of duck meat, this one was a winner and a favourite for us, a simple dish done really well.

The Pan fried beef and Chinese broccoli was also a really great dish, the beef was super tender, and along with the Chinese broccoli, there was also mushrooms, baby corn and carrots, all cooked well, providing a very tasty dish. Our last dish of steamed choy sum in oyster sauce was a simple yet delicious with the choy sum cooked nicely and the oyster sauce not too overpowering. By this time we were completely stuffed, so we flagged down a staff member and asked for takeaway boxes, we ended up with 3 boxes for lunch leftovers the next day.

Overall we had a fantastic dinner at Yummy King BBQ Kitchen, a great local venue with delicious food and friendly service. The Peking Duck Meal Set was beyond our expectations, and we definitely think they are the best value for money duck pancakes you can get in Sydney. There is no fancy duck carving here, just delicious food and generous portions for your dollar. We have already planned our return trip with friends next week so they can see what the hype is about.
