The Rusty Rabbit, Burwood

Nestled away in the new Emerald Square Burwood, is the 2nd branch of Darlinghurst’s The Rusty Rabbit. Currently it is the only non-Asian eatery in the area, making it a winner for those who want something different.

We arrived for a late lunch around 2 pm on a Saturday afternoon, and the restaurant was still packed and buzzing. After a careful and quick glance at both indoor and outdoor seating to find a seat, the staff asked if we were ok with sitting at the back communal bar table, we nodded and agreed, as the table set up itself was pretty cool, and we would have an overall view of the restaurant.

Once seated, the staff offered us menus and asked if we would like any coffee or drinks to start off, we politely declined as we wanted to suss out the menu first. In terms of food, our glance at the menu was pretty quick, most likely because we already knew what we wanted to order from our research on Instagram, we went for the Lamb Eggs (with a hashbrown) and the Pancakes. As it was a warm afternoon, we decided to go with the ice crushes for our drinks, Watermelonade (watermelon and lemonade) and Passiango (passionfruit and mango).

The drinks arrived not long after we ordered them, both were vibrant and refreshing and not overly sweet, it was evident there was no additional sugars added to the ice crushes which made it a great refreshment on a hot day.

Both the Lamb Eggs and Pancakes arrived at the same time at not long after the drinks, with the hasbrown following all by its lonesome self. Let’s start off with the Lamb eggs, the plate looked amazing when it arrived, simple and yet so inviting. There were pomegranate seeds and zaatar that circled the dish, with grilled sourdough spread with labne and topped with lamb kafta, grated cucumber and 2 poached eggs. This dish was so harmonious, everything worked so well together. The labne added a nice tartness, and worked well with the lamb kafta, the cucumber added freshness to the dish and the eggs were poached perfectly. I also ordered a side of hasbrown, as who doesn’t love breakfast with hashbrowns. I couldn’t fault the hasbrown, crispy and golden, it was everything a hashbrown needed to be.I definitely recommended this dish, and will be coming back for more.

We had seen these colourful pancakes all over Instagram, and when it arrived, it looked too pretty to eat and picture perfect. The pancake serving is enormous, and would probably be better shared as a desert between friends than as a single dish. The pancakes itself were quick thick, and topped with ricotta, strawberries, berry compote, half a passionfruit, maple syrup and crushed pistachios. As we started to dig into the pancakes, we found the texture more dense and cakelike than pancakes, which was not what we were expecting. The ricotta and fruit added a nice freshness to the pancakes, although we wished there was more ricotta to balance the sweetness, as the maple syrup had already been absorbed into the pancakes. Overall the pancakes were a great dish, but probably too much for 1 person to have as a main dish.

We had a fantastic time at The Rusty Rabbit Burwood, it’s a nice change to the mostly Asian dominated food precinct. The food was great, the atmosphere was upbeat and modern, and the staff friendly, helpful and warm to all customers. We look forward to going back and trying the Southern Fried Chicken Burgers (which seem to be the main dish coming out of the kitchen)
